Amnesty deadline may be extended: Mr. Shashi Tharoor visit to Oman is successful

- By: Mohd. Irfan, Yahind News

Jeddah, February 7 : The maiden visit by India’s state minister for External Affairs Mr. Shashi Tharoor to Sultanate of Oman had ended successfully, minister known as TWITTER in Indian circle ended 3 days visit to Oman on Sunday. Apart of discussing vital Economic joint ventures between two countries, Minister also sought support for Indian labourer who violated visa rules and waiting to be repatriated back home, presently 26,000 Indians who registered with Indian Embassy to go back to home without any penalty under Amnesty scheme.

The amnesty deadline may be extended for the Indian expatriate population, who have overstayed in Oman. This was announced at a press conference, addressed by Shashi Tharoor, the Indian minister of state for External Affairs on Sunday.

Due to the large number of Indian population, who have applied for amnesty, "It may not be practically possible to send them all back home by March 31, which is the current deadline," said Tharoor.

This announcement came following Sunday's meeting between him and H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nassir al Bakri, Manpower Minister.

The embassy has brought it to the notice of the ministry that it might not be possible to meet the deadline. "The ministry has not given any assurance as of now; though they have indicated to think about it if at all needed," he added.

Further, as earlier thought that the passports of those being repatriated would be blacklisted, so that they cannot enter the sultanate, this has now been sorted out. "The passports would remain valid," he said.

The India-Oman Joint Investment Fund, the first of its kind between India and any other country had been finalized, and the Minister of National Economy of Oman His Excellency Abdul Nabi Macki will travel to India soon to sign the agreement.

Tharoor on Sunday thanked H E Al Bakri for his ministry's efforts in caring for the Indian expatriates and for granting a period of two months to the illegal Indian immigrants to leave the country without paying penal fees. He also met with His Highness Sayyid Fahad bin Mahmood Al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister; Friday he participated in TWITTER MUSCAT MEET programme in Indian Embassy in Muscat, according to reports.
