DR.V.MASILAMANI

Breakthrough in Cancer Detection

Indian laser scientist, Dr.V.Masilamani

RIYADH—An Indian laser scientist in Riyadh has achieved a major breakthrough in the detection of cancer based on laser/lights-induced fluorescence.

The discovery is deemed significant, since the technique could also be applied in the Kingdom, where the incidence of oral and other types of cancer has been reported on a growing scale.

Dr.V.Masilamani, who works in King Saud University as a laser scientist, told YaHind.Com that his new technique, called optical diagnosis, was developed after years of research with a team of physicists and researchers from Anna University, Chennai, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He said his new protocol, known as Masila’s Cancer Diagnostics (MCD), relies on the optical/spectral analysis of body fluids like blood and urine. “It’s a totally new technique of detecting cancer at an early stage,” he said, adding that the technique involves laser-induced fluorescence on human oral carcinoma.

Dr. Masilamani, who developed his technique in January this year, achieved breakthrough during a cancer screening camp in Trichy. A total of 274 subjects were screened at the camp. Of these, 151 subjects had no specific symptoms of cancer. They had complaints of acute pain in the breast, chronic constipation, hoarse voice, etc. Most of them had close blood relatives suffering from cancer.

When subjected to this technique, 68 subjects were found to be afflicted with breast cancer, Cx colon cancer, etc. with 93 percent degree of accura cy. “My technique monitors the disease progression and regression in cancer patients with a selectivity of 91 percent,”said Dr. Masilamani, who was also a visiting scientist in Europe and Canada. He has also published ten research papers and got patents in India. He has also applied for patent in the US.
