A New Poet of New Age

In my opinion, Faheem Jawaid is a new poet of new age. If the word "NEW" is prefixed with a name, the person of that name, the personality belonging to that person and the art and literature created by him would become "NEW"….?
It is since few decades now, that, the usage of the word "NEW" has taken the form of an epidemic….poet of a "New" accent, writer with a "NEW" approach, critic of a "NEW" mind-set etc., etc. If these "NEW" poets, "NEW" writers and "NEW" critics are read and examined profoundly, it is learnt that, one has become "NEW" after searching his agony in "Meer", another has become "NEW" while embracing the style of "Ghalib", and somebody has adopted the thoughts and beliefs of "Iqbal" and has become "NEW". In other words….old wine in a new bottle. This happens, when the poet, the writer or the critic does not bear his own individuality, and when he is unaware of the challenges and requirements of his age.
Discovering and making oneself, compatible with one's own age is an integral part of one's creative expedition. Only a self-known and substantive creator of art could dare this journey. Faheem Jawaid is self-known and a substantive creator. Due to very reason, he has opted for an exclusive new direction, in the beginning of his creative voyage. Otherwise, most of our writers and poets travel their lives and they do not find a track. Consequently, they disappear in the crowd. The path, which Faheem Jawaid has selected for himself, takes him to latent self and to the unknown islands of his age. The poetry of Faheem Jawaid is a story of his individual camouflage, and out of his personality a story of his coiled within coiled age.
Faheem Jawaid strides down in his latent self until noises take the shape of quietness and composure. Tranquility becomes extreme and ultimate. Loneliness spins a web around him. This is the place where Faheem Jawaid meets with himself. He speaks with himself. He sees his face drowned in grief and sorrow. He makes himself acquainted with offended heart and feelings. He is stranded in the yarns of his self. Here, he is introduced to peace and war, serenity and uproar, happiness and sadness. Sometimes, the life looks to him meaningful and sometimes meaningless. Sometimes, every face seems beautiful to him and sometimes ugly and dreadful. Sometimes, relations appear delightful and enchanting and sometimes unpleasant and intolerable to him. In the poetry of Faheem Jawaid, quietness and solitude create a sort of intensity and eagerness that result in his poetry with attention and thoughtfulness.
khmooshi siskiyan leti hai har dum
yahan aawaze pa koi nahin hai
ek khmooshi udaas lehje mein
kore kaghaz pe kuch banati hai
tanhaai ka farsh bichakar
khud se baatein karta hoon
har aahat pe barf jami hai
kitni gahri khamooshi hai
Every age is different from its previous age. The life of every age is dynamic, difficult and different from its preceding age. Faheem Jawaid is well aware of this fact, and has an eye for the temperaments, requirements and the expectations of his age. His style, thoughts, approach and imagination go together with his age and time. He is today's human being and his poetry depicts a three dimensional face of today's human being. He has seen today's life from close quarters and has lived it. He is an inhabitant of today's world and is conscious of twists, turns, and vicissitudes of this world. His voice does not emerge from the domes of the past. His voice emerges from amidst of ourselves and touches the heartstrings of all of us. He does not search his face in the dirt and dust of past. Instead, he sees his face along with everybody's, while painting the picture of new phases and the new worlds, at the frontier of present and future.
tarotaaza hawaain poochti hain
dareecha kya khula koi nahin hai
zamee muqtalif aasman muqtalif hai
har ek shaqs ka imtehan muqtalif hai
alag chand tare alag phool shabnam
meri fikr ka ek jahan muqtalif hai
The poetry of Faheem Jawaid, seems to be a prime target of life's experiences. It looks as if, at every stage of his life, he has dealt with and handled a variety of experiences. All his experiences happened to him with new profiles and forms. He incorporates different people in his experiences and involves himself in the occurrences of others too. This act of sharing experiences with others brings him in understanding the extensive realities of life. He takes his experiences from small quarters and spreads all over the world. This enhances his self-confidence and encourages him to face every twist and coil of happenings around.
saare logaon ne jism per apne
tajrubaon ka libaas pehna hai
baap ke marte hi Jawaid
bachcha boodha lagta hai
tajrubaon ki zameen per Jawaid
aadmi zindagi se milta hai
Faheem Jawaid's poetry comprises of assorted thoughts and variety of feelings and emotions. He has built a sort of world in his thoughts….a world, which has no boundaries and frontiers. He prefers breathing in wide-open circumstances and conditions.
He has treated the words air, windows, ocean, illustrations, sky, birds and forest beautifully in his poetry. The usage of these words portrays the poet's varied character and insight. Narrow and restricted lands and skies suffocate him and life seems a kind of punishment to him. Marvelous atmosphere, fresh airs, the waves of the ocean and the flying birds pull him toward themselves.
khirhkeean saari khol do ghar ki
aa rahi hai hawa samandar ki
khwab main koi mila ho jaise
har taraf taaza hawa ho jaise
parinde jabaja hain aasman per
unhein ab dekhta koi hanin hai
ab zameen tang hai yahan Jawaid
saans lena bhi saza ho jaise
Multiplicity of subject matter and variety of expression can easily be seen in the poetry of Faheem Jawaid. Every subject is presented keeping in sight the norms and standard of the poetry. Another good quality is that the poet has not presented his poetry for want of appreciation and admiration. He does not try his poetry to be a type of journalism or rather yellow journalism. Nor does he let his poetry be a sky-roaring slogan. History, politics, religion, culture, society….whatever the subject matter be, he rationalizes while justifying the needs of "Ghazal". The heaviness and immensity of the subject does not affect the art of his poetry, instead, it attracts and adds a new significance to the expression. What today's literature in today's world demands exist in Faheem Jawaid's "Ghazals".
is se pehle ke waqt patthar ho
kijie ehtejaaj patthar ka
kitna dushwaar kitna mushkil hai
zindagi ke makaan mein rehna
jabaja hon sarkate saaye jahan
ek mukammal saqs kab poora hua
ab zameen ko lapet lo Jawaid
ab kahan is jahaan mein rehna
Faheem Jawaid is a word-conscious poet. He has treated the wordings for expressions, with great diligence, exquisiteness, subtlety and care. His style and attitude have quietude, moderateness and a natural poetic rhythm. Although he has tried in somewhat limited meters, but the flair and grace of these meters, harmonize with his finesse and elegance. Due to this very reason the poet's personality and his poetry seem go together. This would be quite fair to state that Faheem Jawaid's poetry is the reflection of his own persona. He has presented his thoughts, passions, feelings, experiences and contemplations rather successfully in the mode of his poetry.
shab ki baaradari se her lamha
chand taaron ko dekhta hoon main
jhilmil jhilmil palkoan se
darya ka ek rishta sa hai
dard ki chandni mein ummidein
meer ka sher gungunati hain
saaf shaffaf aasman per ab
apne ashaar likh raha hoon main
Certainly, Faheem Jawaid is writing his poetry on spotless and transparent sky, and I hope that with the light of his poetry a new dawn will be commenced.
Beside Urdu, various writings of Faheem Jawaid in English have also arrived on the scene. These days, he is busy in delicate and tough task of transforming numerous quality Urdu stories and articles into English language.
