The word “difference” seems to do everything with Iqbal Fareed Mysori, born
in 1941, in Mysore, India. He is working in Al Ghosaibi Shipping Company
in Dammam since 23 years now.
Doing different things at different times in a different manner is his forte. He is an Urdu poet, calligrapher and a typewriter artist ---- all with a difference.
The title of his first poetry collection is "Rang-e-Digar," which means "Different Color." The book is different in its style and comportment, because the writer himself wrote his poetry in his beautiful handwriting, unusually, in this age of computers.
His other book "Iqbal Fareed Aur Rang-e-Digar," which means "Iqbal Fareed and Different Color," rather an extension of his previous book, is different in its approach and manner. This book is a collection of all write-ups, impressions, and articles, written on his first book by renowned critics and writers of Urdu literature, from every corner of the world. With this book, Iqbal Fareed paid tribute to them, who read his first book and found time to write their commentary, observations, and remarks.

Iqbal Fareed is a typewriter artist with a difference. He made his first portrait at the age of 18. It was of Jawaharlal Nehru. This is a unique artistry done with the help of one selected key of an old typewriter. No pencil or eraser is used. Old and new ribbons are used to portray different shades, as and when required. The keys of hyphen, dashes, and brackets are also used to draw the lines of clothing, costume, and uniform.

He has typewritten a total of ten portraits of various national and international celebrities. They are Mahatma Gandhi (Father of nation), Mirza Ghalib (Great Urdu poet), Dr. Zakir Hussain (Former President of India), Jawaharlal Nehru (First Prime Minister of India), Indira Gandhi (Former Prime Minister of India), Richard Nixon (Former US President), Devraj Urs (Former Chief Minister of Karanataka, India), Dharam Veer (Former Governor of Karnataka, India), Bagil Taya (Former Superintendent of Police, Karnataka, India), and Vladimir Lenin (Russian Marxist philosopher and leader).

With the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi (10"X8"), Iqbal Fareed was featured in a book "Typewriter Art," written and edited by Alan Riddell, London Magazine Editions, London; published in 1975. Sixty-five artists from eighteen countries with one hundred and twenty portraits and sketches were included in this book. The point to be noted is, out of sixty-five, only four artists made life-like portraits, and Iqbal Fareed was one of them. Moreover, Iqbal Fareed was the only Indian featured in this book.
After viewing the attached portraits you would wonder, whether there is any limit to a man's innovation and novelty. Look at them and try to figure out, as to how the artist was able to materialize a variety of expressions on the faces of his portraits.
Note: Letter "m" is used in Mahatma Gandhi's and Ghalib's portraits. Letter "n" is used in Jawaharlal Nehru's and Nixon's portraits. Letter "z" is used in Zakir Hussain's portrait. In rest of the portraits letter "m" is used.
