LAUGHTER
(Laugh) A demure laugh, (LAUGH) A bold Laugh, (laugh) Crying Laugh, (Laugh) A horror Laugh. These are merely a few of the different types of laugh that we encounter or experience day by day nut has it ever occurred to us, Why do we laugh? Why dont we all laugh at the same time? Let me give you an explanation with this from what I learned.
Let me divide this information into 3 parts, Number One, Why do we laugh? There were 3 theories that I read on How Stuff Works on why we laugh first is the incongruity theory suggests that humor arises when logic and familiarity are replaced by things that don't normally go together. For example, if you remember my first speech I was talking about someone who was the SHE in my speech you were all expecting that I will be talking about my mother not expecting that it was only my cat with that replacement we laugh. The second is Superiority Theory this comes into play when people tends to focus on peoples mistakes so what happens is people who arent made fun with feels superior to that person. The last theory is the relief theory this theory was the basis of some movie makers for example in an action/thriller movie the director builds up the tension and suspense in the movie and when it is at the climax the director suddenly inserts a side comment that suddenly make the watchers laugh and reduces the tension given to the audience. Now that we have an idea on why we laugh lets move on to the next information.
Why dont we all laugh at the same things? One of the reasons with this is because of our age infants or children are constantly discovering the world around them, stuffs that are surprising or ridiculous seems funny to them even if adults think they are corny. Pre-teens or teenagers are almost universal because they laugh at some young humor or adult humor because this is the moment wherein they are searching who they are. On the other hand Adults are more mature thinkers with their experience whether wonderful or tragic with these experiences you deal with humor differently.
The last information would be what is the purpose of laughter? There was a philosopher who believed the laughter was a shared relief of a person who has survived a dangerous situation, and this might also trigger a biological flight or fight response that laughter can indicate trust in ones companion. Laughter can prove to be the best connection maker from one person to another. I know everyone has encountered the saying laughter is the best medicine right? But let us see if you will still say that after what laughter can do to us whether positive or negative. Laughter increases blood pressure it is good for low blood people but harmful for high blood people. Laughter changes breathing it is good for hard breathers because it aids in ventilation for our lungs but bad for asthma prone people. It increases heart rate a good exercise for our heart but dangerous to persons with heart problems. Boosts the immune system theres no negative side to that. Aside from that let us also take not that laughing is harmful to patients that were newly operated because their wounds might open up easily. But laughter can also help relax muscle tensions Some hospitals even have their own "Humor Rooms," "Comedy Carts," and clown kids in attempts to speed a patient's recovery and boost morale.
These are merely few information about why we laugh and what is its purpose, I would like to share you an inspirational saying I got from a book of quotes: Joyfulness keeps the heart and face young. A good laugh makes us better friends with ourselves and everybody around us.
