Dubai Municipality ensures safety of escalators in public places

Dubai, 13 September 2017:

Dubai Municipality has called on all those working in buildings, shopping centers and markets to secure the escalators by installing a cover to protect the upper conveyor belt and provide the required protection in the area of the beginning of the conveyor belt to reduce the phenomenon of accidents occurring due to hanging and climbing of children and getting their clothes stuck to it.

The Health and Safety Department in Dubai Municipality recently organized a workshop to discuss the conditions, specifications and safety requirements of the escalators in public places. The workshop was conducted as part of the Municipality’s keenness to implement the highest standards of safety in the escalators and to ensure a safe environment for people in all public places.

The workshop was opened by Eng. Redha Salman, Director of Health and Safety Department in the presence of Eng. Sultan Al Suwaidi, Head of Occupational Safety Section, and Eng. Yousef Al Jasmi, Head of Inspection Bodies Accreditation Section at the Emirates International Accreditation Center.

Salman pointed out that all elevators, escalators, moving walkways and conveyor belts must have a certificate of examination and compliance with the safety requirements from a company accredited by the Accreditation and Compliance Center and renew them periodically.

He said Dubai Municipality is keen on the participation of all segments of the society through the exchange of views and proposals to ensure public safety and we do not spare any effort in implementing the highest standards of health and safety in all public places in Dubai according to the best international practices.

Salman recalled the circular issued by Eng. Hussein Nasser Lootah, Director General of the Municipality, regarding enhancing the safety standards of escalators and providing additional protection for all segments of the society, based on the provisions of the Local Order No. 11 of 2003 on Public Health and Community Safety in the Emirate of Dubai.

He said the Municipality hopes to get full commitment and contribution from all in implementing the Local Order No. 11 of 2003 on Public Health and Community Safety in the Emirate of Dubai. “We urge people not to violate the local order inviting fines, punishments and legal procedures,” added Salman.

The workshop discussed in detail the safety requirements for the escalators as well as the circular issued by Dubai Municipality in this regard. The participants listened to the views of technical officials on how to avoid and prevent accidents related to escalator safety.

The workshop was attended by representatives of escalator manufacturers, escalator safety testing companies accredited by the Emirates International Accreditation Center and a number of specialists on safety aspects in shopping malls.
