NEW DELHI: Haji Mehboob, a member of the Sunni Waqf Board, on Wednesday said that they are in favour of an early settlement of the Ayodhya dispute and Kapil Sibal’s request to defer the hearing until after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls was wrong.
Mehboob, who is one of the petitioners in the case, hinted that Sibal’s allegiance with the Congress may have influenced his statement in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Sibal while representing the Sunni Waqf Board had urged the Supreme Court to defer hearing in the Ayodhya title suit till July 2019 when the next Lok Sabha elections will be over.
However, the demand was brushed aside by the court as it fixed February 8, 2018, for commencing a final hearing in the case.Following the Sibal’s statement, Congress distanced itself from the leader’s stand, saying that it is his personal opinion.Who he represents in court is Kapil Sibal’s personal matter, Congress has nothing to do with it. Arun Jaitley ji represented the accused in Bhopal gas tragedy, does that mean whole of BJP is to be blamed?” He questioned.
Congress, in response to the BJP’s accusations, clarified that it has always maintained that it will abide by the decision of the Supreme Court.
“Congress stand has always been clear, that Ayodhya case will be decided by SC, same has been said by the Law Minister many times,” he said.
